About
I design and produce everything I make with unrelenting attention to detail, in order to craft one of a kind future heirlooms. My work is not complicated, but often simplicity is the hardest to execute well as there are no embellishments to conceal or obfuscate.
My career trajectory has been unusual, as I left a certain career in academia to work with my hands. In sharp contrast to my academic career, my woodworking path has been entirely vocational, as I have picked up everything on the job, out of a combination of necessity and determination to succeed in doing what I love.
In my work I draw on the breadth of experience and expertise I have had the privilege of being exposed to in my career. I have variously worked as a furniture and cabinet-maker and bench joiner, in three very different workshops, traditional, high-end residential, and commercial. During this time I was fortunate to work alongside highly skilled craftspeople, with a wide range of expertise, from conservation and restoration, to architectural joinery and vernacular reproductions, to premium contemporary pieces working in multiple media beyond wood - stone, veneers, fine metals, and using the latest high-end materials, finishes and hardware. I combine these experiences and knowledge into my work, taking time and care in selecting the right materials for every project based both on its aesthetics but also on its use case.
One of my core drives for moving into this profession has been a keen interest in traditional skills and crafts and the preservation of intangible cultural heritage (on which the integrity of the tangible conservation of the built environment depends). This is especially important to me in an age where many of these skills are disappearing or under existential threat. Every piece I make, and you buy, restores a little of that knowledge and captures a little of that soul that still exists and is fighting for its relevance.
